Rev. Basil Virgil Hicks Sr., 92, an honorably retired member of the Presbytery of Arkansas, died Nov. 24, 2009, in Little Rock, AR.
A native of Missouri, Hicks graduated from School of the Ozarks, Arkansas College (now Lyon College), and Columbia Theological Seminary.
After ordination in 1943, he served churches in GA, KY, FL, LA, and Scotland. In this presbytery he was pastor of First Presbyterian in Arkadelphia and Park Hill Presbyterian in North Little Rock and interim pastor at First Churches in Harrison, Jonesboro, Jacksonville, Mountain Home, Rogers and Westover Hills Presbyterian in Little Rock and Central Presbyterian in Pine Bluff. He held various positions of leadership and responsibility in synods and presbyteries but was most proud of the honorary doctorate he received from Lyon College.
Hicks is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dale, of Presbyterian Village in Little Rock, three sons and one daughter, six grandchildren and two brothers. A memorial service was held at Trinity Presbyterian, Little Rock on Nov. 28. Gifts may be given to the Clyde and Delpha Beasley Hicks Endowed Scholarship at Lyon College, Trinity Presbyterian in Little Rock, or Presbyterian Village Foundation.
